Discover Tempelhof’s SOIL SECRETS: Testing & Analysis at Westfeld GartenSoil Testing & Planting (NEW DATE!)
Mai 13, 2023 @ 14:00 - 18:00
Join us when we get the soil ready for the first forest garden on Tempelhofer Feld with 2 workshops:
Workshop I: Pollutants on the Tempelhofer Feld – Effects on Plants and People
They are invisible, smell of nothing and yet they can be in the soil: pollutants. The Tempelhofer Feld was formerly used as an airport. Aircraft kerosene, fire extinguishing foams and co – everything can have left contaminations. Together with neighbors of the future Westfeld Garten, we want to take a look at which pollutants can occur and take practical soil samples, which will then be sent to a laboratory. We will discuss what a potential pollutant load would mean for edible trees and shrubs and thus also for people, and how we can nevertheless develop the community and an environmental education garden on this site in a healthy way.
Workshop II: Open Soil Atlas in the Westfeld Garden. Citizen science for soil
In 2021, the Feld Food Forest (FFF) community launched the Open Soil Atlas project (OSA), an open source citizen science project with the aim of raising public awareness and monitoring soil health in Berlin. In 2021, the team developed protocols and methods for citizens to playfully investigate urban soils. The goal is to expand the project to create a citizen science model for Europe that focuses on scalability, replicability and policy impact. Together we will bring citizens close to the soil of Westfeld Garden. We will present the background of the Open Soil Atlas and guide people through our soil test methodology.

Where? Tempelhofer Feld, on the site of the future Westfeld Garten, close to the Tempelhofer Damm entrance U Paradestraße.
How? Just join us on the site of the future Westfeld Garten to test soil and learn together about pollutants, soil quality, and soil regeneration! We’ll offer all props and guidance.
Why? Because the first step to starting our forest garden is to acquire knowledge about the ground where it will flourish. Together with Janna from FFF and Elena from OSA we will spend an afternoon learning about and from the soil.
